There are few things more disappointing than waking up and discovering somebody has eaten your leftover takeaway.

You spend the entire night knowing it's there.

You wake up slightly hungover, shuffle towards the kitchen and begin mentally preparing yourself for the glorious sight of yesterday's fried chicken waiting patiently beneath a sheet of foil.

Except in Kentucky, one woman arrived downstairs to discover that the culprit wasn't a partner, a child or some freeloading housemate.

It was a fucking bear.

Not metaphorically.

Not "my husband eats like a bear."

An actual bear had reportedly walked through the front door, smashed a glass table, eaten the leftover KFC and fucked off again.

Which is quite an aggressive way to ask whether anyone wants the last drumstick.

THE DOOR WAS OPEN. THE BEAR ACCEPTED THE INVITATION

The incident happened at the home of Kendra North in Harlan County, Kentucky.

According to reports from People and local station WLKY, North and her partner had left their front door open overnight to get some air into the house.

Then they went to bed.

And forgot about it.

Now, leaving the front door open overnight already feels optimistic.

In Britain, that's how you wake up with:

No television

No car keys

Three fewer pairs of trainers

And a confused drunk called Darren asleep underneath the coat rack

In rural Kentucky, apparently the burglary demographic is broader.

Because at some point during the early hours, a bear appears to have smelled dinner and wandered inside.

Presumably after checking the opening hours.

THIS WASN'T EVEN A QUIET BURGLARY

The bear didn't sneak in, delicately remove a chicken wing and leave £4.99 beside the gravy.

It reportedly shattered a thick glass table.

North's sister, who lived nearby, heard the noise and initially thought there had been some sort of crash.

She then saw the bear coming out of the house.

At which point she did what any responsible sister would do when she discovered an enormous wild animal had just left her sibling's home.

She rang her.

North, however, was asleep.

And declined the call.

Twice.

Which is spectacular.

Imagine sleeping so deeply that an actual fucking bear can come into your house, smash the furniture, eat your dinner and leave while your phone is ringing beside you and your subconscious still decides:

"Nah. Probably not important."

Somewhere a smoke alarm is looking at this woman and wondering what the fucking point is.

THE KFC NEVER STOOD A CHANCE

Once inside, the bear found leftover KFC sitting on the table.

Game over.

For millions of years, bears have survived using one of nature's most sophisticated noses to locate berries, insects, fish, nuts and whatever else happens to be available.

Then humanity invented fried chicken coated in eleven herbs and spices.

Evolution never accounted for this.

You cannot spend thousands of generations developing an extraordinary sense of smell and then expect the animal to casually ignore a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken sitting twelve feet away.

That's not wildlife misbehaviour.

That's targeted advertising.

The bear ate the leftovers and left.

No reports of it attempting the gravy.

No indication it downloaded the KFC app.

No attempt to collect Colonel's Club points.

Just straight in, chicken, property damage, gone.

The perfect takeaway customer.

OWNER DEVASTATED BY ACTUAL IMPORTANT PART OF STORY

North reportedly escaped the entire encounter unharmed because she slept through it.

Her reaction afterwards included the entirely understandable observation that she was "a little sad over my KFC."

Quite right too.

Everyone else is focusing on the bear.

The insurance company will be focusing on the smashed glass.

Wildlife officials are focusing on safety.

But nobody is asking the difficult question:

How much chicken was left?

Because "leftover KFC" covers an enormous range.

If we're talking one miserable wing and half a corn cob, fair enough.

If there was a Zinger, three strips, two hot wings, chips and half a tub of gravy still in play, this is no longer a wildlife incident.

It's grand theft poultry.

AND THEN ANOTHER BEAR TURNED UP

You might imagine that having one bear wander through your house would be enough wildlife excitement for the week.

Apparently not.

North said that two days later another bear appeared on her porch while she was cooking sloppy joes.

At which point you have to wonder whether the first bear has been leaving reviews.

"Great little place in Harlan County. Open late. Relaxed dress code. Chicken excellent. Table slightly fragile. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐"

Suddenly the entire local bear population is checking Google Maps.

"Try the house with the open door. Apparently Thursday is KFC night."

The second appearance does at least support a fairly important point made by wildlife officials: if bears discover easily accessible food around a property, they are considerably more likely to keep coming back.

Which makes sense.

Humans do exactly the same thing.

Put free sausage rolls in the office kitchen and watch how quickly Accounts learns migration patterns.

WILDLIFE OFFICIALS ISSUE THE MOST KENTUCKY ADVICE EVER

Kentucky wildlife officials have urged residents in areas where bears are present to remove easy food sources.

That means securing rubbish, bringing pet food indoors and generally avoiding leaving edible invitations lying around the property.

North has also learned another useful lesson:

Shut the front door.

Normally this is advice issued by dads because somebody is "heating the whole bloody street."

Now we can add:

"Because a bear might come inside and eat the fucking Bargain Bucket."

Progress.

THE BEAR IS NOT REALLY THE VILLAIN HERE

It's tempting to frame the animal as some sort of 20-stone Deliveroo thief.

But from the bear's perspective, the evening probably looked completely reasonable.

Door: open.

Food: available.

Humans: unconscious.

That's less a burglary and more an unattended buffet.

The bear didn't understand property law.

It didn't recognise the Colonel's intellectual property.

It certainly wasn't sitting outside thinking:

"I know that belongs to somebody else, but fuck it, I'm going in."

It smelled fried chicken.

And acted accordingly.

Frankly, there are humans who have shown less restraint at a motorway services.

LESSON LEARNED

Thankfully, nobody was hurt.

The homeowner has one hell of a story.

The bear got fed.

And somewhere in Kentucky there is now presumably one black bear that has discovered ordinary forest food tastes absolutely shit compared with Original Recipe.

Which could become a problem.

Because once you've gone from digging through the woods for acorns to smashing your way into a house for fried chicken, there is no going back.

Today KFC.

Tomorrow it's standing at the drive-through window at 2am demanding a Mighty Bucket for One.

And you'd better hope they remembered the fucking gravy.
