CARSE REMAINS OUTSIDE THE GROUP
Brydon Carse has again been left out of England’s Test squad as the side prepares to face Pakistan at Edgbaston on 9 September.
The fast bowler was stood down before the second Test while the Cricket Regulator investigated an incident outside a Derby nightclub. Derbyshire Police said it was looking into an allegation of assault, but reporting has stressed that it is not known what involvement, if any, Carse had in the alleged incident.
Carse was arrested and subsequently de-arrested. His continued omission is not a finding of wrongdoing, and the regulatory process remains ongoing.
The selection decision means England will head into the final match of the series without bringing him back into the national group, despite Carse having appeared for Durham since he was first withdrawn.
SONNY BAKER STAYS, MATTHEW FISHER GOES
Sonny Baker, who was called up as a replacement before the second Test, retains his place as fast-bowling cover. Sam Cook is also included, while Matthew Fisher has been released from the squad.
England’s 15-player group is captained by Joe Root and also includes Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir, Harry Brook, Jordan Cox, Ben Duckett, Emilio Gay, Dan Lawrence, Ollie Pope, Ollie Robinson, Jamie Smith and Josh Tongue.
The balance gives England a deep collection of seam options without automatically signalling a change to the team that won at Lord’s.

ENGLAND ARE NOT PLANNING A GENTLE FINALE
England have already secured the series after winning the opening two Tests. Interim head coach Marcus Trescothick indicated that consistency may be preferred for the final match rather than treating Edgbaston as an experimental afternoon once the trophy is safe.
The stated target is a 3–0 victory. That places selection pressure on the reserve players while asking the established side to recover and repeat its performance one more time.
Pakistan, meanwhile, have made extensive changes to their touring party after losing the series. Seven players and two coaches were removed from the group before the final Test, giving the match a rather unusual contrast: England considering continuity while Pakistan reaches for a sizeable reset button.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
Carse’s position will depend on the outcome and timing of the Cricket Regulator’s investigation. Until then, his absence should be described as exactly that — an omission while a process continues, not a conviction quietly invented by the sports pages.
For England, the more immediate question is whether the frontline bowlers recover well enough to play again. Edgbaston begins on Wednesday 9 September, and the team has made clear that a clean sweep matters.
